EXPORT - IF THEY WON'T DO IT, YOU CAN!
 
ACCORDING TO A RECENT CALL-UP SURVEY CONDUCTED FOR ARTHUR ANDERSEN'S ENTERPRISE GROUP AND NATIONAL SMALL BUSINESS UNITED, AN ASSOCIATION OF SMALL BUSINESS OWNERS WITH MORE THAN 60,000 MEMBERS, 88% OF SMALL BUSINESSES DOES NOT EXPORT THEIR GOODS OR SERVICES.
 
THE SURVEY WAS MADE OF 6,000 SMALL BUSINESSES, OF WHICH 37% OF THE RESPONSES SAID THAT THEY WERE INTERESTED IN STARTING OR EXPANDING EXPORT SALES BUT THEY WERE RELUCTANT AS THEY DID NOT HAVE THE KNOW-HOW OR INFORMATION. A FULL 20% SAID THEY KEPT AWAY FROM FOREIGN BUSINESS AS THEY DID NOT HAVE THE FINANCING TO DO SO. A FURTHER 14% THOUGHT THAT THEY WOULD NOT BE COMPETITIVE TO ENTER INTO A FOREIGN MARKET.
 
IT'S AMAZING TO SEE THE RESULTS OF THIS SURVEY WHEN THE DOMESTIC MARKET IS SO POOR AND THERE WERE RECORD BANKRUPTCIES IN THE U.S. THIS YEAR. THE EXPORT MARKET IS ONE OF THE ONLY BRIGHT SPOTS FOR U.S. BUSINESSES AND THE U.S. HAS TOPPED GERMANY AND JAPAN AS THE NO. 1 EXPORTER OF GOODS ACCORDING TO THE 1991 ANNUAL REPORT OF GATT (GENERAL AGREEMENT OF TARIFF'S AND TRADE). LAST YEAR EXPORTS OF MANUFACTURED GOODS ALONE FROM THE USA TO WORLD MARKETS WERE $422 BILLION, AN INCREASE OF 7.5% OVER THE PREVIOUS YEAR. AMERICAN SALES TO UNDERDEVELOPED COUNTRIES LAST YEAR ROSE BY 15% TO NEARLY $147 BILLION. AND YET SMALL BUSINESSES AS PER THIS SURVEY WAS RELUCTANT TO GO INTO EXPORT. JUST THINK OF HOW MUCH MORE THE LEVEL OF INTERNATIONAL TRADE WOULD BE IF THE VAST NUMBER OF COMPANIES THAT DO NOT EXPORT WOULD 'WISE UP' AND DO AS THE GERMANS AND JAPANESE DO - EXPORT!
 
AFTER ALL THERE IS NO EXCUSE FOR THE NO-INFORMATION OR KNOWLEDGE EXCUSE AS THERE IS SO MUCH HELP AND INFORMATION OUT THERE AVAILABLE TO ANYONE ON INTERNATIONAL TRADE. IN PARTICULAR, THE CENTRE FOR INTERNATIONAL TRADE IS OFFERING A ‘HOW TO’ COURSE COVERING ALL ASPECTS OF EXPORT AND INTERNATIONAL TRADE. THE BUDDING EXPORTER CAN SET HIMSELF UP WITH THE WHOLE BALL OF WAX AND HAVE AN INSTANT EDUCATION IN A THREE SET BOOK DEAL.
 
ONE OF THE OTHER REASONS CITED IN THE CALL-UP SURVEY WAS LACK OF FINANCING. HOWEVER, LITTLE MONEY IS REQUIRED TO SELL IN THE OVERSEAS MARKET AS MOST SALES ARE DONE ON LETTER OF CREDIT BASIS AND IN SOME CASES FOREIGN BUYERS ARE WILLING TO PREPAY ORDERS AND SEND THE MONEY WELL IN ADVANCE.
 
THE CENTRE FOR INT'L. TRADE COURSE GIVES STEP BY STEP WAYS TO OBTAIN FINANCING IF NEEDED AND COMPLETE INSTRUCTIONS ON HOW TO WORK WITH AND PROCESS LETTERS OF CREDIT, SIGHT DRAFTS AND EVEN HOW TO USE THE LETTER OF CREDIT FROM AN OVERSEAS BUYER AS COLLATERAL, MAKE ASSIGNMENTS TO SUPPLIERS AND MUCH MORE.
 
WITH THIS ‘HOW TO’ COURSE THERE JUST CAN'T BE ANY EXCUSE NOT TO GO GLOBAL. EVEN THE RECENTLY LAID OFF WHITE COLLAR WORKER CAN BECOME AN EXPORT MERCHANT/TRADER FROM HIS OWN HOME OVERNIGHT WITH THESE BOOKS. IT'S EVEN A GREAT NEW BUSINESS VENTURE FOR WOMEN AND MINORITIES WHO WANT TO STRIKE OUT ON THEIR OWN IN A NEW FIELD.
 
YES, EXPORTING DOES REQUIRE A COMMITMENT OF TIME AND ENERGY, SO DOES ANY NEW MARKET OR BUSINESS. THIS ONE HOWEVER IS BOOMING UNLIKE THE DOMESTIC MARKET THAT IS IN THE DUMPS AND NOT LIKELY TO GET ANY BETTER FOR SOME TIME TO COME.

EXPORT TRADE REPORT
 

INTERNATIONAL TRADE IS OF VITAL IMPORTANCE TO THIS COUNTRY AND YOU SHOULD BE PART OF IT. U.S. MANUFACTURED EXPORTS ALONE WERE $1.842 trillion LAST YEAR. AGRICULTURAL PRODUCTS (SOYBEANS, FRUIT, CORN) 9.2%, INDUSTRIAL SUPPLIES (ORGANIC CHEMICALS) 26.8%, CAPITAL GOODS (TRANSISTORS, AIRCRAFT, MOTOR VEHICLE PARTS, COMPUTERS, TELECOMMUNICATIONS EQUIPMENT) 49.0%, CONSUMER GOODS (AUTOMOBILES, MEDICINES) 15.0% MAIN EXPORT PARTNERS CANADA 19.4%, MEXICO 12.8%, CHINA 7.2%, JAPAN 4.7% (2010).

HOWEVER, WE HAVE A LONG WAY TO GO IN THE FIELD OF INTERNATIONAL TRADE. ONLY A SMALL PERCENTAGE OF ALL MANUFACTURERS EXPORT OR TAKE AN ACTIVE ROLL IN TRYING TO PROMOTE OR SELL THEIR PRODUCTS OVERSEAS. EVEN THE ONES THAT DO SELL THEIR PRODUCTS OVERSEAS DON'T CONSIDER IT VERY IMPORTANT AND EVEN IF THEY DO HAVE AN EXPORT DEPARTMENT IT IS OFTEN STAFFED BY A SO CALLED EXPORT SALES MANAGER AND A SECRETARY. FEW MANUFACTURERS GIVE THEIR EXPORT MANAGERS A HIGH CORPORATE STATUS AS WOULD BE THE CASE IN GERMANY OR JAPAN. THERE ARE ALSO RELATIVELY FEW EXPORT MERCHANTS OR TRADING FIRMS AND NONE OF THE GIANT TRADING HOUSES SUCH AS YOU CAN SEE IN JAPAN OR EVEN HONG KONG AND SINGAPORE.
 
EXPORT IN AMERICA HAS HAD THIRD CLASS STATUS, BUT THIS IS NOW CHANGING. IT HAS TO CHANGE AS PEOPLE COME TO REALIZE THAT WE CAN'T SURVIVE AS A MAJOR ECONOMIC POWER WITHOUT MAKING IMPROVEMENTS ON HOW WE SELL OUR PRODUCTS OVERSEAS. EVEN NOW CANADA, OUR NEXT DOOR NEIGHBOR, IS OUR LARGEST TRADING PARTNER. THIS IS UNDERSTANDABLE BUT HAS LEFT US COMPLACENT AND CONTENT TO LET THE OTHER COUNTRIES SUCH AS JAPAN TAKE THE LEAD.
 
YOU CAN MAKE A SMALL CONTRIBUTION AND START TO CHANGE THIS BY YOURSELF ONE STEP AT A TIME. THE EXPORT BUSINESS IS GROWING AND IT IS POSSIBLE FOR ENTERPRISING NEW BUSINESS PEOPLE TO ENTER THE FIELD AND DEVELOP A BUSINESS THAT HAS THE POTENTIAL TO GROW. SOME PEOPLE THAT HAVE ENTERED THE BUSINESS HAVE PROSPERED AND MANY CAN BE SEEN ON THE FORTUNE MAGAZINE LIST OF 'BILLIONAIRES'. TAKE A LOOK AND YOU WILL SEE THE POTENTIAL IS LIMITLESS. YOU CAN SET YOUR SIGHTS HIGH BUT YOU HAVE TO START SMALL AND BUILD UP YOUR INTERNATIONAL CONTACTS ONE STEP AT A TIME.
